Its invention is credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian maker of musical instruments. It is believed to be invented in Greece in the 3rd century BC, while the piano was not invented until the 1700s. It’s cousin, the pipe organ, dubbed by Mozart as the “king of instruments,” preceded the piano by centuries. Among all the keyboard instruments, the piano is arguably the most popular. That is why, in a typical symphonic orchestra set-up, the piano is positioned in the percussion section. Though the piano is a stringed instrument, it is considered to be a percussion instrument because of the mode of sound making, where the strings are struck and not plucked. Each string of a piano holds approximately 168 pounds of tension, making the total tension of a standard piano with 236 strings a whopping 18 tons. A standard piano can have upwards of 12000 moving parts.
